Flash card powerpoints
Please help your child have a successful year in Kindergarten by practicing with flashcards nightly. Practice all cards out of sequence. Please use a different sequence each night.
Your child needs to be able to:
Alphabet
Identify uppercase letters out of order
Identify lowercase letters out of order
Produce the sound each letter makes
Identify a word that begins with each letter. Example “Aa is for apple
Write all upper and lowercase letters
Sight words
Identify each word by sight without hesitation.
Spelling is not a must but is encouraged. This will help your child become a better writer.
Numbers
Identify numbers 0-30 out of order
Count to 30.
Begin to count to 100.
Write numbers 1-30.
Count by 10’s, 5’s, and 2’s.
I suggest starting with about 5 cards. When your child can identify all 5 without hesitation add 5 more cards, 10 cards in all. Keep adding 5 cards until your child is practicing all of the set.
Alphabet: Start with the letters in their name
Numbers: Start with 0-5
Sight words: If your child can identify most letters and letter sounds then start practicing otherwise hold off for a little while. (I, Like, see, me, a)
I will be assessing student progress every 9 weeks. However, I will assess as often as time permits especially on those students who seem to be having difficulties.
Suggested Activities to make learning Flashcards fun.
1. Use magnetic letters or tape flashcards to the refrigerator. Before your child can get into the refrigerator he/she must name the letters/numbers/sight words. Or as your cooking dinner have the child name different flashcards.
2. Flash light fun: Hang flashcards in bedroom. Turn off the lights and use a flash light to identify the cards on the wall.
3. Create a fishing pond. Make a fishing pole with a ruler or stick, string, and a magnet. Place a paperclip on the flash cards. Have your child catch a card with his/her pole and name the flashcard.
4. When you go grocery shopping hand your child a box of food. (Favorite cereal, fruit roll ups, pop-tarts, etc.) Ask your child to find letters of the alphabet on the box as you shop.
5. Write letters, numbers, and words in pudding, play dough or sand.
